Those familiar with Iran won”t be shocked but for a lot of people, there”s something hugely disturbing about being sentenced to death because you changed religion. So it is with the stone age regime in Iran who have sentenced a man to death for daring to convert from Islam to Christianity.
Youcef Nadarkhani, a 34 year old father of two, was arrested in 2009 for ”apostasy” – abandoning the state religion of Islam. He was reported to police after complaining to his son”s school about his child being forced to read from the Quran.
Nadarkhani was given the ”opportunity” to redeem himself by denouncing Christianity but the pastor for the Protestant Evangelical Church of Iran decided not too. It is unclear if Nadarkhani is even alive as a death sentence from a court in Iran can be carried out immediately. Lakon prison, near the pastor”s hometown of Rasht, has a reputation for carrying out secret hangings prior to notifying relatives.
His wife has also been imprisoned for practising Christianity previously. Iran”s lower court noted that Hadarkhani had never practised Islam during his life but was still guilty of apostasy because he was born into an Islamic family.
A full history of the case can be found at Youcef Nadarkhani. A sad, sad case that shows the Iranian regime as nethanderal murderers.
Iranian officials called Nadarkhani a ”criminal” and ”zionist” – common terms for anybody that dares to go against the regime.
