Virgo is the sixth sign of the Zodiac and it’s dates are August 23rd to September 22nd. Often depicted as a young maiden carrying a sheaf of wheat, the image is often associated with fertility goddesses such as Assyrian Ishtar (from Babylon) of the Greek Persephone. It is also associated with the Greek Astraea, the last immortal to abandon Earth. In Latin, Virgo is translated from ‘Parthénos’ meaning “virgin”.

In Astronomy, the constellation of Virgo lies between Leo and Libra, spanning approx 150 – 180 degrees of the Zodiac. The sun passes through this region between August 23 and September 22 in the tropical Zodiac.

Given Virgo’s association with fertility and the Earth, it is no surprise it is one of the three Earth Signs of Western Astrology (Taurus and Capricorn being the other two). In this context, fertility is not just female related but associated with the fertility of the soil and the earth – hence the symbolism of carrying the sheaf of wheat. The sun’s transit in the Virgo marked the beginning of harvesting the wheat in ancient Egypt.

Being an Earth signs, Virgo’s are practical and hardworking. Those born under Virgo in particular will be practical and organise things. Even their dreams are rooted in what is practical, unlike Air signs such as Libra who can be prone to bouts of complete fantasy rooted in nothing. A Virgo has a keen eye for detail and will excel at bringing order to chaos and making sure the little things are carefully considered as much as the big picture.

This earthy, goddess association manifests as a caring person, one who takes pleasure in helping others. There is often a tinge of nihilism about them, almost as if they are expecting disappointment. To truly get to know a Virgo is to understand that they will only feel safe with you when you have showed them that you do love and care for them. This must be in practical and emotional ways. Born of the earth, Virgo’s will critically analyse any relationship to ascertain whether it is right and practical. They have an easy going charm that belies the depth of their ability to rationally appraise a relationship and its future potential.

Don’t mistake this rationality into thinking that Virgo’s can’t handle change. Their cardinal sign is Mutable, making them feel comfortable when the time for change comes. This will be after much deliberation and analysis, and that change will have been planned. You would be foolish to take a Virgo for granted. When a situation is no longer worth it, Virgo can shake the ground as they bring about change.

Virgos are great friends and will hold friends for life – if the other party keeps up their part of the relationship. They naturally want to help, tease out problems, listen ad suggest solutions. They might not have numerous friends but they more than make up for that in having friendships that go deeper than most would understand. Typically conservative, Virgo’s treasure the family and are naturally drawn to conservative values.

Placed in the right career, Virgo’s will excel at bringing order to the work environment and take care of the details, paperwork and making sure systems are in place. Problem solving comes easily and it is likely that will entail getting the opinions of those around them for a particular problem. Being practical, expect savings to accrue and money management is usually not an issue for them. Expect savings to be made in buying the practical solution that is cheaper rather than something fancy dripping with bells and whistles. They will excel at anything they put their mind to. The downside of this is that to maintain order, a Virgo will often take on more than they should. Their planning and attention to detail means others may not be up to their standards leading to a constant mountain of work they need to get through.

In romance, Virgo’s are cautious and won’t really open up at the early stages. Trust in the relationship is earned, not promised. It’s bewildering to a Virgo to promise one thing and do another and those types of actions will weigh heavily on a Virgo. Being clear with a Virgo about the relationship is appreciated. While they may appear easy-going, there is a world of analysis and overthinking going on inside. It takes time to truly get to know a Virgo and despite their reputation for materialism, in romance, it is heavily tinged with whether a person demonstrates the qualities that appeal to a Virgo. Even after a long time, Virgo’s will still be seeking to improve their relationship. The downside of this is they are prone to noticing EVERY detail in a relationship and thus you’re habit of strewing hair shavings all over the sink and leaving towels on the bathroom floor will not go unnoticed. It might be worth reminding a Virgo that not every little thing matters but expect that to be ruminated upon.

Mercury is the planet of Virgo and it also rules Gemini. Despite having the same planet, both signs are very different. Gemini is open and full of expression and can easily hop from one thing to the next in a fleeting second. Virgo will prefer to take one thing, organise it, work on it and perfect it before moving onto the next thing.

In an emergency, forget receiving flowers from a Virgo – they will more likely be there to help on a practical level. Bringing soup, helping with the kids, organising a consultation with a divorce lawyer – this is the way Virgo helps. They will be thoughtful and diligent, constantly monitoring the emergency and taking the next practical steps to solve it. Expect blunt talking and matter of fact expressions. But at it’s heart, Virgo is thoughtfully helping you navigate whatever emergency is ongoing.
