Sometimes you have to go full circle to really know where you started. It seems a bit that way with our understanding of how our bodies work and the approach we take to our gut health and medicine. Modern western healthcare is based on the understanding of cause and effect. It is a linear relationship and we cannot ‘fix’ an […]
Our Gut Health, Science and the Ancients
Gut Health
It’s amazing to think that even within our own body we aren’t the majority shareholder. We are composed of 30 trillion human cells that make up everything from your hair to skin, toenails and organs. But vastly outnumbering them are the 90 trillion of viruses, bacteria and fungi that live within us. Most of these live within the gut area […]
Garlic
For a plant that can be grown almost anywhere, it’s amazing that over 66% of garlic consumed worldwide is actually grown in China (other figures suggest 80%!). That’s right, the garlic you’re buying in your local supermarket with a quaint family-farm sounding name on it has probably been shipped half-way around the world before being nicely packaged for your consumption.
Melon, Kiwi & Kale Smoothie
Kale can be difficult to incorporate into smoothies without its seaweed/cabbage taste overpowering the other fruits. I find this smoothie great as it’s easy to make and secondly, it’s a great starter base for adding in other fruits and vegetables. It can be filling enough to have as a breakfast without being overcome by hunger half an hour later.
Ginger
I’m slow to use the term ‘wonder food’ for any single item. Our bodies aren’t designed to overdose on any particular food but as a means of combating infection and illness, ginger (and garlic, and lemons!) really tempt me to use the moniker.
Tangy chickpea soup
Chickpea soup, easy and packs a healthy punch! This soup is great when you want something that little bit different. There’s a real tang to tickle the tastebuds.
Chives
One of the easiest herbs to grow, chives never seem to make it into the list of many gardeners, herbalists, shamans or witches which is a shame because for something so easy to grow we really should be making more use of them. To grow, stick them in a pot of compost and water in. That’s about it! When needing […]
Flat Bread
Flat bread is great. It is so easy to make, cooks quickly and is delicious straight out of the pan. Making your own bread is always going to be a win-win. It will have no chemicals added to it and it won’t have extra fat injected into it to prolong shelf life. I am constantly amazed at how something so […]

Homemade pizza, no cheese
Cheese. It’s everywhere. On chips, burgers, pasta, sandwiches – the list is endless. The US Department of Agriculture reckons we’re eating over 30 pounds of cheese each per year. Truth is, cheese involves a dairy industry that cares far more about profit than animal welfare and eating the stuff promotes inhumane conditions for animals as well as consuming a food […]
