The Gospel of Mary is a fascinating Gnostic text discovered in 1896 by Dr. Carl Reinhardt who purchased it in Egypt and brought it to Berlin. It dates from the late fourth or early fifth century and wasn’t fully published until 1955. Later fragments of the script were discovered within the Nag Hammadi collection and Berlin Gnostic Codex leading scholars to suggest that the Gospel of Mary was once distributed widely.
Despite three sources for the Gospel of Mary, sections have still been lost to time (Chapters 1-6) but what remains is commonly taken to be an account from Mary of ‘Magdala’ or Mary Magdalene. Within the gospel, it is written that Jesus loved Mary more than the others which could be taken that Mary was the closest to Jesus – or the wife of Jesus! It is this aspect of the Gospel that has provoked the most controversy, some of it completely hysterical but to focus on this is to miss the point of the text completely!

The book, The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh and Henry Lincoln and published in 1982 argued Jesus married Mary and went onto have a number of children which were spirited away to France to avoid being killed and it is their bloodline that constitutes the ‘Holy Grail’. This theme was made more famous by Dan Brown’s book, The Da Vinci Code in 2003 and which turned the spotlight back on claims that Jesus was married.
For whatever reason, the Gospel of Mary is one of a number of ‘lost’ gospels that the Church omitted from what we see today as the Bible. I’m not going to get into the conspiracy theories as to why this was done because the stunning revelations within the Gospel go far beyond whether Jesus had a wife or why the Church left it out of the bible.
Instead, the magnificent revelations within the Gospel of Mary are the way it describes how the universe works. More importantly, it references the manner in which ‘God’ exists and our own abilities to operate in a non-physical way and interact with energy using only our mind.
Consider the first full lines of the Gospel;
22) The Savior said, All nature, all formations, all creatures exist in and with one another, and they will be resolved again into their own roots.
23) For the nature of matter is resolved into the roots of its own nature alone.
What Jesus (the Savior) was saying was that everything is energy and all energy exists within everything – there is no separation between the energy in us and the energy we take to be ‘external’ to us. At our most basic level, we are an energy form with a consciousness and we ‘vibrate’ at a slightly different frequency to the energy we say is outside of us. In the Gospel, that there is no externality to us is made clear – we “exist in and with one another”! That all energy (“the nature of matter”) is resolved into its own nature is telling us that all energy resolves to itself – i.e. that all energy, no matter what shape or structure it may have, resolves back into energy and is constantly being reused. We can better understand this in terms of Yin and Yang – energy is forever changing from Yin to Yang and is never completely either – it is just an everflowing cycle and at any point in time, energy that is yang is on its way to becoming yin.
In my book, The Eternal Reason, I describe the universe as akin to a big lake and everything within it as being composed of water. We exist within this lake and although we go around creating an identity for ourselves and labeling this piece of water as a tree or that as a car, in the end they are all composed of water. Everything, at its most basic level in this lake is water and in metaphyscial terms, everything in this universe is just energy to which we give different labels and identities but in the end, it all resolves back into energy.
25) Peter said to him, Since you have explained everything to us, tell us this also: What is the sin of the world?
26) The Savior said There is no sin, but it is you who make sin when you do the things that are like the nature of adultery, which is called sin.
27) That is why the Good came into your midst, to the essence of every nature in order to restore it to its root.
28) Then He continued and said, That is why you become sick and die, for you are deprived of the one who can heal you.
This section relates to the way God is everywhere. In the beginning, the Creator had to create a balance to his existence. That balancing force is us, our consciousness and free will. We are the balance to the power of the Creator. To create us, the Creator split himself into two halves and further split one of those halves into countless beings – This act I call the Perfect Balance because the sum total of the energy of all conscious beings in the universe is equal to the energy of the Creator. By this Act, ‘God’ came into our midst or as the Gospel of Mary describes it, God came “to the essence of every nature.” We only sin when we act in a manner that is foreign to the Creator and the balance between us and him i.e. When we act with love, we act in accordance with the Creator and the balance. When we act from anything but love, we are ‘sinning’. When we ignore the divine within us, when we fail to understand the power we hold within us, (“for you are deprived”), then we fail to heal because we remain ignorant of our own true power.
30) Matter gave birth to a passion that has no equal, which proceeded from something contrary to nature. Then there arises a disturbance in its whole body.
31) That is why I said to you, Be of good courage, and if you are discouraged be encouraged in the presence of the different forms of nature.
32) He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
33) When the Blessed One had said this, He greeted them all, saying, Peace be with you. Receive my peace unto yourselves.
34) Beware that no one lead you astray saying Lo here or lo there! For the Son of Man is within you.
35) Follow after Him!
36) Those who seek Him will find Him.
37) Go then and preach the gospel of the Kingdom.
This deals with the concept of ‘sin’ or when we act in a manner that is contrary to the principle of love. When Jesus says “if you are discouraged, be encouraged in the presence of of the different forms of nature” he is telling us that we can re-align ourselves by essentially bathing within nature. Nature has a inherent ability to vibrate in union with the Creator. The forest you walk within does not seek to control you. It does not seek to harm you. Rather it just exists and is in perfect harmony. We are told to listen to our inner voice and our gut feeling. Rather than listening to the rules, demands and expectations of society. For this reason, so many people feel at peace in nature, that they lose the stressful energy, or the worries that normally plague them. He goes on to specifically say this by saying ”Peace be with you”. Our souls seek little else but peace because when we are at peace, we are in a place where we are in alignment with the divine nature of energy and of the Creator.

In lines 34-46 it is even more explicit- The divine nature, god, spirit or whatever you want to call it – is not found in some external place – it already exists within us! Because we came from the Creator, to find this balance, to know what is right, to know love, we need only go within and listen to ourselves. The term ‘Know Thyself’ springs to mind!
38) Do not lay down any rules beyond what I appointed you, and do not give a law like the lawgiver lest you be constrained by it.
Here he tells us not to constrain ourselves with laws. This is to say that many rules and regulations are only constraining our abilities and are designed to keep us in a state of ignorance. Consider for example, working to pay a TV licence or car tax – when we exist in this state it is impossible to train the mind to operate with energy let alone interact with it and be aware of it. Many of our laws are simply laws introduced to build a structure in which we are all being trained to act, behave and operate in a particular manner. Almost as if we are being swamped with laws to prevent us from ever truly living.
9) Blessed are you that you did not waver at the sight of Me. For where the mind is there is the treasure.
10) I said to Him, Lord, how does he who sees the vision see it, through the soul or through the spirit?
11) The Savior answered and said, He does not see through the soul nor through the spirit, but the mind that is between the two that is what sees the vision and it is […]
Pages 11-14 are missing from the Gospel but the lines above are a revelation for they state it is our mind that acts as the bridge and allows us to see to other worlds and energy. Think of our pineal gland and its ability to see – an ability that was once taken for granted but over time we have convinced ourselves that there is no such thing or ability. It is our mind that sends our thought pattern out into the universe, it is this energy pattern that manifests that which we think about.
The remainder of the text concerns Peter’s anger that Jesus would talk to Mary instead of to the disciples.
When we think about the revelations within the Gospel of Mary and understand what it is describing, it isn’t a far reaching leap to understand why it was left out of any Church teachings. That people would be able to operate on a level whereby they had a direct understanding of the way our minds work and affect our physical reality meant some institutions would be pretty much useless. It would be impossible to control people if they were all free and able to follow their soul purpose instead of chasing after consumer goods.
